FOLLOWING Pearl Harbour and the fall of Singapore, the tremendous war effort meant that Americans forces soon ‘occupied’ Brisbane. All up, it is estimated that one million American troops passed through the city during 1942-45.
“The social disruption altered the lives of so many in Queensland’s sleepy capital, particularly young women,” said Melanie Myers, the author of the novel Meet Me at Lennon’s.
At our April meeting, Melanie will speak about the effects and legacy—good and bad—of this tumultuous period.
All are welcome at the Uniting Church Centre, 52 Merthyr Rd, New Farm, at 2.30pm on Saturday, 23 April. Sumptuous afternoon tea to follow. $10 (members $5).

I have just moved to Newfarm from Bulimba it’s a lovely place such a different feeling this side of the river. It’s very leafy and the park is so nice to go and have a sit down. Just love it here. My son also lives around the corner from me in Bowen Terrace and feel they way I do. I might pop in to the uniting church on the 23 April.
