WHAT a transformation between 2008 and 2016 in the area between Evelyn Street and Skyring Terrace, Newstead. In the photo below, the Gasometer is hidden behind the trees at the base of the crane on the right hand side.
Before any of this recent development which was officially announced in 2007, the land was used for the Gasworks, railway sidings and vast piles of coal. Extensive remediation took place before redevelopment began. In the 1850s, this was the site of “Beulah”, the farm of the Childs family. (Photos: G Benjamin)
