The bells of St Stephen’s

Saturday, 30 October 2021 —— Enjoy the talk here

At our October meeting, historian Sr Anne Hetherington will present ‘The Bells of St Stephen’s’, centring on the St Stephen’s site in Elizabeth St which dates from 1843. St Stephen’s Chapel is Brisbane’s oldest still-standing church, and is one of only three pre-separation buildings remaining in Brisbane.

Anne is a Sister of Mercy, a former teacher and Principal of All Hallows’ School. “Bells will receive a passing mention,” she says, “but the emphasis will be on the history and architecture of both the chapel and the current cathedral. In recent years I have been a regular guide at St Stephen’s (covid-permitting).”

The venue is the Uniting Church Centre, 52 Merthyr Rd, New Farm, and the meeting (to be recorded) is to take place at 2.30pm on Saturday, 30 October. Afternoon tea will be available, and all are welcome. Entry: $5 (members $4). —— Enjoy the talk here.

  1. Dear Sister Anne
I was fortunate to be able to attend the St Stephens School reunion in August and at which you spoke. I was totally enthralled by the information you had researched. I was at the school from 1951 to the end of 1958 and both my grandmother my mother (1916 to 1925) and her 4 sisters were there. During the conversation afterwards it was said that there were no indigenous children there. Well Sister in my later years at the school there were 3 indigenous girls in my class as well as an indigenous boy in my Holy Communion photo. And we were all friends together and remember all there names. I just thought i should make these facts known to you. As well we had Yugoslavs, Polish, Maltese, and of course Italians.
A real melting pot. Sister once again thank you for sharing the rich history of the Catholic Church in Brisbane and St Stephens School. It was marvellous.
